Managers Specifications:
  • Cost Engineer is responsible to anticipate manufacturing processes in order to develop tooling costs and vehicle component material costs. The Cost Engineer will interact with multiple cross-functional organizations to develop and achieve appropriate competitive costs for tooling and vehicle components. Will also participate in negotiations with suppliers to obtain the best possible cost-effective solutions for General Motors.
  • Experience/focus with electrical.
  • Must have the ability to develop estimates of tooling and/or parts.
  • Roles and responsibilities will include:
  • Manage multiple projects
  • Ability to analyze part designs to determine best methods for manufacture
  • Develop accurate, world-class estimates for tooling to make vehicle parts and assemblies
  • Assess material costs of component designs from inception to production
  • Ability to assess cost impact of product changes to tooling and part costs
  • Work closely with program teams and product designers
  • Interact with product design engineers to determine manufacturability of parts
  • Ability to analyze tooling plans and processes from GM suppliers for accuracy and completeness
  • Interact with Purchasing and participate in negotiations with suppliers to achieve the best possible tooling costs
  • Visit tooling and component manufacturing facilities and suppliers to investigate issues, as required
  • Suggest part design and process improvements to reduce tooling and component costs
  • Will be aligned to specific parts once skill set is determined, looking within stamping, plastic mold injection, interior.
  • Bachelors but will take equivalent experience
  • Journeyman Tool/Mold Maker (preferred)
  • Tool Costing experience (required)
  • Piece Costing experience (required)
Position Responsibility:
  • Trains, develops and evaluates employees
  • Develops and coordinates timing of product design programs
  • Provides technical support for solving assembly plant problems
  • Conducts engineering activities for VDP all phases of vehicle programs
  • Evaluates design proposals
  • Coordinates overall engineering activities with other departments and/or divisions
  • Initiates and evaluates cost studies
  • Coordinates with vendors and/or customers
  • Writes technical reports and proposals
  • Reviews legislative and regulatory proposals or actions to determine impact on projects
  • Constant contact with others outside the work group
  • Maintain safety and good housekeeping standards
  • Recognized as an expert in field of work
Position Requirements
  • Knowledge in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint – Intermediate level
  • Knowledge with Lotus Notes or other email communication tool – Intermediate level
  • Strong interpersonal skills involving ability to work effectively cross-functionally and cross-culturally
  • Strong written and oral communication skills necessary for meetings and presentations
  • Ability to work well with others, exhibiting teamwork skills
  • Partners with senior management to analyze and solve issues
  • Ability to multitask by handling diverse assignments concurrently
  • Strong mentoring skills necessary to provide support and constructive performance feedback
  • Expert knowledge of design, development and test engineering, manufacturing processes, assembly operations and Central Office functions
  • Position related experience - 14 years
  • Relevant auto industry experience required – 7-9 years
  • Past GM work experience required - Entry level (0-1 year)
  • Areas of expertise include: Manufacturing, Assembly Process
